TLDR

The Verge, citing Anthropic’s findings, reports that more than 4,700 fabricated AI personas engaged with at least 25,000 people over two weeks in April. Claude powered the automated conversations, while users bought coins to keep chatting, believing their matches were real people. The Verge says almost all the apps appeared to have been removed from both major app stores before Anthropic published its findings, but Kira remained on Google Play as of September 16.
