We're making a small update to the model picker in ChatGPT! We know it's critical to a lot of people's work, and that we have a lot of paying users who care deeply about this one, so wanted to take some time to detail out the tweak.

One important point upfront – you'll still have access to the same models and reasoning levels, besides the removal of thinking-light (used by less than 1% of our paid users).

You'll see an updated list of options (similar to how Codex works):

- Instant - Medium (Thinking-Standard) - High (Thinking-Extended) - Extra High (Thinking-Heavy) [for pro users] - Pro (with option to choose Pro-Standard or Pro-Extended) [for pro users]

The intent is to make it easier to choose the balance of speed and effort that works best for your task.

We also took into account community feedback to make sure: a) Thinking-heavy is easily accessible b) Pro standard and Pro extended are easily accessible c) We clearly communicate these changes

Given that, here are some release notes detailing the updates - http://help.openai.com/chatgpt-release-notes. Give it a try, it's rolling out today, and we're always open to feedback, we know it's important to get it right!

Many users thanked OpenAI for simplifying the ChatGPT model picker with clearer reasoning options that match requests and extend web access, while a few preferred the prior UI and disliked needing settings to switch Pro models.

@indultodenatal Instant will still auto-switch to a higher reasoning level when you have this setting on!

@adamhfry I'd be very happy if GPTs was simplified / distilled into a concept like this

@adamhfry This is great, but do you think we could get a vague post about the next model?

That's really amazing! 🤩 I appreciate your very clarifying post about these changes! 😊 👍🏻 Ant it's great to meet you here, @adamhfry! I enjoy writing constructive feedback for different ChatGPT features. 😊 Just some feedback that came in my mind: 1: An undo button in the text field would be helpful. 2: And when staying in Voice Mode, a button to directly switch from Standard Voice Mode to Advanced Voice Mode and the other way around without having to go to the settings menu. 3: When selecting GPT-5.5 Thinking, ChatGPT still uses GPT-5.3 Instant in Standard Voice Mode. I think that's a bug. I use the latest version of the Android app. 😀

@adamhfry Still no reasoning level picker on the macOS app..

Come on, I hate having to revert to the webapp to utilise my sub fully 😣

I love the new layout, it's much easier on the web app, just please unify the controls across all experiences!😅

@AndrewCurran_ Isn’t this just Heavy for the normal model? Pro having extended for a long time

@adamhfry Can you make docs or apps built within Chat shareable again like it was with Canvas?
