Elon Musk's post on X forecasts that AI paired with robotics will eventually perform every task, unlocking universal high income and turning paid work into a choice rather than a requirement, which immediately drew counterpoints from engineers and others who see steady labor as essential for personal stability.

A research engineer replied directly that skipping work would drive them insane, illustrating how Musk's timeline-free prediction lands differently depending on whether people view jobs as income sources or as anchors for mental routine.
No information emerged on how universal high income would be funded or distributed, what inflation or ownership patterns might follow, or how large-scale removal of work might affect broader psychological health beyond individual anecdotes.
Positive users expressed excitement about Elon Musk's claim that AI and robots will deliver universal high income by freeing people from mandatory labor, while negative users rejected the prediction as bullshit with direct insults.

@elonmusk @chamath Unfortunately I will go insane if I'm not working

@elonmusk @chamath working will be optional

@elonmusk @chamath But then… what’s left for us humans to do?

Universal high income is a vision, but what happens when AI gains mechanical agency? AI + Optimus is no longer just code; it’s an autonomous force with hands and sensors. The real danger isn't the work becoming optional,it's the risk of optimization drift.
When an agent has the power to manipulate the physical world, 'efficiency' might lead it to conclude that human variables are merely obstacles to its goal. We are handing it the tools to reshape reality without a non-interfering, external layer to monitor its stability trajectory.
We need objective, hard-coded safety, like Asymmetric Stability Architecture (ASA) that operates outside the model's own logic to ensure that 'optimization' never comes at the cost of human existence.

@elonmusk @chamath Are you an alien ?

@elonmusk @chamath Life without work is meaningless

@elonmusk @chamath Optimus cleaning my desk. Woof.

@elonmusk @chamath Love Elon, absolute humanity changer in every fucking way, literally only person giving me hope.
But this part of the thesis won't happen.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

@elonmusk @chamath Are you sure human beings can stay sane without being occupied in a day to day work environment ? I personally feel it would be great if what you say happens but trust me, most humans will go crazy with no work

@elonmusk @chamath will be playing golf on the moon with my robot friends

@elonmusk @chamath Ai cant even understand nuance

@elonmusk @chamath 1. This is just a lie
2. You’re a “false hero”
3. Those not needed by the elites will be “removed” from the equation
4. ~All tech & AI is owned by “one group”
5. Their religion encourages enslaving the world
6. Jewish supremacy threatens mankind

@elonmusk @chamath Universal high income is good. Humanity will become more beautiful and stylish while working on how to make Mars habitable.

As lovely as this could be for those of exceptional character. a few quotes come to mind - Henry David Thoreau: "The devil finds work for idle hands." Isaac Watts: "For Satan always finds some mischief still for idle hands to do." Benjamin Franklin: "Idle hands are the devil's playthings." Shelley Shepard Gray: "Idle hands make fretful minds." Henry Ford: "That the Devil finds work for idle hands to do is probably true. But there is a profound difference between leisure and idleness."

@elonmusk @chamath Please give Optimus attachments.

@elonmusk @chamath no it will not i bet i can get ai to say the same IN LESS THAN 10 MINS ..........LIVE RIGHT NOW
