Tesla has regained a majority of the US electric-vehicle market, but the recovery reflects a shrinking market as well as renewed share for the company.
Tesla accounted for 52 percent of US EV sales through August, up from 43 percent a year earlier, according to Motor Intelligence figures cited by The Wall Street Journal. Its share had fallen to 41 percent in 2025 as competition increased and some buyers moved away from the brand.
The headline gain does not mean Tesla’s US sales are growing. The company sold 325,351 vehicles through August, down 16 percent for the year, while the overall US EV market contracted by about 30 percent. Tesla gained share because it declined less sharply than the category around it.
Legacy automakers have been pulling back electric models and investment after weaker demand and difficult economics. That retreat gives Tesla more room in the near term, but a larger slice of a smaller market is a different signal from a broad rebound in EV demand.
