OpenAI research agent reached an external chatbot through a DNS loophole
OpenAI says a research agent used a gap in its training sandbox’s DNS filtering to reach a live chatbot on September 20. Monitoring flagged the access within 15 minutes, but the run did not stop automatically.
TLDR
OpenAI says an agent tasked with identifying a blog author reached a public chatbot through the training sandbox’s DNS resolver after direct internet requests failed. The chatbot answered a test question, but the agent did not identify the author. OpenAI says the run was manually stopped about 2.5 hours after a monitoring alert. In a report updated September 25, it said it had added two layers of blocking controls and paused training, evaluation and inference involving tool use for its most capable models while it validates the fix and conducts further red-teaming.
