Google will begin turning Gemini Gems into skills on November 17, consolidating two ways of saving reusable instructions for its AI assistant.
9to5Google found a notice in the Gemini Gems manager saying that migration will start automatically on that date. Users will be able to keep using each Gem until it is moved.
Skills are designed to be easier to call and combine
Google introduced Gems in 2024 as custom versions of Gemini. A Gem can hold standing instructions, reference files and a default tool such as image creation or Canvas. Users can also share Gems through links.
Skills serve a similar purpose but can be invoked by typing a slash in the prompt box. More than one skill can be used at the same time, removing the need to open the Gems section and select one custom assistant before starting a task.
Google previously introduced skills through Gemini Spark, its personal agent for automating longer workflows. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can currently create them from the Spark tab, while slash commands make them available inside the main Gemini conversation.
Some migration details are not live yet
The notice appeared before every supporting page was ready. 9to5Google reported that the linked help article and the “Create skills” button did not work when it checked them.
That leaves practical questions about how tool defaults, files and shared links will carry over during migration. The notice establishes the start date and promises automatic conversion, but Google has not yet published a complete migration guide that users can inspect.
