FireSat Adds Three Satellites To Enable 20-Minute Wildfire Updates
Sundar Pichai says Google and its partners moved the wildfire-detection project closer to near real-time global tracking.
“With just one year in orbit, the first FireSat satellite has already spotted wildfires invisible to existing satellites. After a successful launch early this morning, 3 more satellites joined the constellation, bringing us one step closer to our ultimate goal of near real-time wildfire updates every 20 minutes.”
Sundar Pichai@sundarpichaiTECH#105In a post on X, Sundar Pichai said the first FireSat satellite has already detected wildfires "invisible to existing satellites" after a year in orbit, and that three more satellites launched early Tuesday to join the constellation. He said the goal is near real-time wildfire updates every 20 minutes, and credited Earth Fire Alliance, Muon Space, the Moore Foundation, the Bezos Earth Fund and SpaceX as partners in the effort.
“Already catching fires other satellites couldn't even see and that was just one. Four of them running 20 minute cycles changes the entire game for wildfire response.”
