Microsoft plans to remove more of the traditional operating-system deployment role from Windows Deployment Services in the next Windows Server release, continuing a deprecation that has already affected newer Windows clients.
Microsoft's WDS guidance says workflows that use the boot.wim image from installation media to launch Windows Setup in WDS mode are deprecated for Windows 11 and newer boot images.
PXE boot remains, but end-to-end setup changes
WDS has long let administrators start computers over the network and install Windows without visiting each machine. Microsoft's change does not eliminate every Preboot Execution Environment function. Custom boot images and deployment systems that use WDS only for initial network boot can continue to work in supported configurations.
The deprecated path is the older end-to-end workflow built around installation-media boot images and WDS mode. Microsoft recommends Configuration Manager or third-party deployment products that use custom boot images when the old workflow is unsupported.
