Introducing VOX: a microphone you wear on your skin, made for private dictation. Works with low-volume speech (even whispers) and in loud environments. Remappable buttons for your shortcuts.
Augmental launches VOX, a $200 skin-worn microphone for whisper dictation
Integrated remappable buttons support custom user shortcuts.
Button activation removes always-listening concerns
Unlike voice assistants that wait for wake words, VOX stays off until the user presses a physical button, which the company says is a deliberate choice to avoid continuous audio monitoring.
Proceeds support the company's accessibility hardware
Each $200 beta unit is fully refundable before shipping and carries a 30-day return window; the company states that money from this batch will fund MouthPad tongue-trackpad units for users who cannot afford them.
Many users are excited about Augmental's VOX skin-worn mic as an impressive and needed hardware interface for voice-based AI, while some object to its $200 price, limited OS compatibility, and potential data privacy issues.

I bought one. When I first saw array microphones back when I worked at Microsoft back in 2005 the researcher who showed it to me said he spent $10,000 building it. This is battery powered and costs $200.

MouthPad and VOX introduce Skinware, technology worn where the body meets the machine.
In case you missed it, this isn't the only thing we're unveiling today:
Every VOX clip in this thread is a live demo. No cuts.
@StartupYou @augmentaltech Good question. VOX isn't an always-on recorder like Limitless or Friend. You start and stop capture yourself. It supports 2 hours of continuous audio streaming, more than a full day of work, even for heavy dictation users.
@augmentaltech @tomasmas took me to dinner a few weeks ago and he was wearing VOX - the dictation was perfect in a crowded restaurant with VOX under a shirt and a jacket. It blew my mind
@augmentaltech based based based
@augmentaltech Mouthpad integration is cool. But tricking headphone users to upping the volume to get blasted wasn't cool
@augmentaltech Congrats!! This was already amazing months ago, can’t wait to see what you’ve done. Preordered. :)
@augmentaltech Two big announcements in one day — MouthPad going public and now Vox. Huge day for @augmentaltech and @tomasmas!
@augmentaltech my current setup is a gooseneck microphone that looks like it was designed in the mid 1900s, creating on eyesore, stuck on my desk super excited to use this for prompting everywhere
@augmentaltech 🔥 cant wait for this
@augmentaltech How is the battery life?
@augmentaltech Had a great time trying this out!
@augmentaltech @Scobleizer want to come by and try it out?? I have a feeling you would love this.
@augmentaltech This seems delicious
