OpenAI is starting to design its own data centers. The third major data center news of the day. It's absolutely insane how computing is being expanded (NVIDIA is delighted). The WSJ reports that the forecast with OpenAI climbed from roughly $600 billion earlier this year as OpenAI signed additional cloud agreements. Project Camellia in Georgia will reportedly begin with a $20 billion investment. OpenAI has contracted for 3.2 gigawatts of power, delivered between 2028 and 2032, and will act as lead designer and developer for the first time. It also hired former xAI Colossus leaders Brent Mayo and Uday Ruddarraju to oversee infrastructure delivery.

The Information says the company has explored multiple sites, including new construction and converting an existing warehouse. It has sent data-center employees to Texas and advertised infrastructure roles in Austin, Bastrop and Conroe. Supermicro’s CEO said his company was helping SpaceXAI build “another new Gigawatt AI datacenter” within a year, although he did not disclose its location. This makes SpaceX one of the most significant oracles in history and the most important hyperscaler.

@kimmonismus The rich get richer in the compute market. Honestly it just means higher limits for us and bigger and better models. Let's see if Anthropic can keep up. Weren't Microsoft striking a deal with them to give them more compute? If so we may have a competition on our hands.

Poaching the xAI Colossus leads is the detail that matters more than the dollar figure — Colossus was built in roughly 122 days, an absurd timeline by industry standards, and OpenAI just hired the people who know how to do that. $750B is an abstraction; hiring the team that proved you can compress a multi-year data center buildout into months is the part that actually changes what's physically possible to deliver by 2028.
