How to turn an old MacBook into a home file and media server

Start with macOS File Sharing

Apple's File Sharing controls are under System Settings, General and Sharing. Owners can turn on File Sharing, add specific folders and decide whether each user receives read-and-write, read-only, write-only or no access. Apple also supports making a shared folder a Time Machine backup destination and limiting how much space those backups may use.

For Windows devices, Apple documents an additional SMB option. The owner enables SMB and chooses which Mac accounts can connect. Apple warns that passwords for some Windows-sharing accounts may be stored less securely, so those accounts should be disabled when they are not needed.

This built-in route is enough for ordinary file access and backups. It also leaves macOS intact, which makes it easier to maintain than a full server conversion.

Add a media library without replacing macOS

Engadget points to Plex, Kodi and Infuse for people who want the MacBook to organize and stream video. Plex can build a browsable library with artwork and metadata, while home streaming is available without the remote-access features that require payment.

The laptop's age still matters. Low-memory Macs may stutter when they have to transcode 4K video into another format on the fly. Engadget suggests streaming in the original quality where possible, which reduces that processing load but shifts the compatibility requirement to the playback device and network.

Some Intel MacBooks may also need a headless HDMI adapter to keep graphics acceleration available when no display is attached. That is a specialized fix, not a requirement for basic file sharing.

Linux offers more control and more work

The advanced path replaces macOS with Debian, then adds a web-managed layer such as CasaOS or Umbrel. A comfortable command-line user can instead run Docker on Debian and assemble services individually. Engadget lists Nextcloud for private file storage and Jellyfin as an open-source media-server alternative.

That route turns the Mac into a headless server administered remotely, but it also removes macOS and asks more of aging hardware. Apple-silicon Macs can run Debian in a virtual machine instead of replacing the operating system, though that adds another layer of overhead. For most homes, built-in sharing is the lower-risk starting point; Linux makes sense when the goal is a broader self-hosted server and the owner is prepared to maintain it.
