Now you have a lot of usually laughable philosophy around closed (in terms of safety, risk, security, sovereignty). That too has many reasons, but a lot can be traced back to folk who were essentially researchers who have the delusion that capability is upstream of monetization.
Someone like Alex Karp, for all his flaws, has understood the last point much better than most "frontier AI" honchos and commentariat even when you only had models like Flan T5. I'm also not saying that there's never a case for closed, I'm commenting on the gymnastics around it.
