Wanted to buy a new Mac Studio for San Francisco. We don’t even know how to make these anymore.
OpenClaw steward Peter Steinberger posts a parody macOS screenshot to joke about Apple's lack of Mac Studio updates
Story Overview
Peter Steinberger, the Austrian developer now at OpenAI stewarding OpenClaw, posted a fabricated macOS dialog box showing a nonexistent 2025 Mac Studio with M3 Ultra chip and 512 GB memory to needle Apple over stalled desktop updates, with Dan Siroker chiming in about snagging one before high-end units dried up.
High-end configs have grown scarce lately
The 512 GB unified memory upgrade on M3 Ultra models was removed around March 2026 because of DRAM shortages, capping remaining units at 256 GB with longer shipping windows.
Next refresh could slip further into the year
An M5 Max or Ultra Mac Studio is still expected sometime later in 2026, but earlier hopes around WWDC have already been pushed back by the same memory supply issues.
Positive users note successful early Mac Studio purchases before discontinuation, while negative users express frustration over severe shortages, long delivery times, and limited high-RAM options.

@steipete 96GB is max now? WTF

@steipete @steipete Where there is a will, there is away.

@onesadlittleboy its all about the RAM

@steipete The most cherished posession in our family, running back five generations, back when AI had no body:

@steipete Even the 256GB variant has been snapped up by AWS.

@tsopicland Yeahhhhh

@steipete I was looking for these just recently hoping supply chain becomes better ASAP.
Really hoping we get a Mac Studio 512/1024gb ram M5 Max Ultra this year.

@steipete Wonder if M6 Pro Mac mini wouldn’t be faster than M3 Ultra?

@steipete Waiting for september releases. Think the current supply is just running out.
They're probably prepping for M6, slowly demand rises, new ultra systems will go up in price and they'll get a boost in stock.
Might even boost it to 1TB memory

@steipete I am working on something that will drop the memory residence by 1/4th and keep the native MLX speed.
Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-8BIT 39.32 tok/s @ 14.29GiB memory residency with no quality loss.
Currently testing DeepSeek V4 Pro, which is circa 800 GB on disk on my 256 GB Studio :)

@steipete maybe one of them greate new AMD boxes? :D

@steipete Honestly this photo hurts more than the caption. you can buy

@steipete They stopped making them in early March, got mine for 9k, 512 is selling for over 24k on eBay rn

@steipete How much of that ram do you actually use though?

@steipete Looks like one cannot buy 120 GB of memory for your Mac Studio anymore. What happened???

@steipete @onesadlittleboy If there is no RAM it will be SWAP, and that is no good.

@steipete ill sell u my only one for 1 bajillion dollars!

@virgilerietsch @steipete man ... it's RAM, man

@steipete I split the cost with my parents and bought a Mac 512kb in 1985. It was the best computer ever. I feel you Peter.

@tsopicland @steipete Ok, Well where there is an even bigger will, then with a lot patch cables and patience there is a "way".
