We need @AlexBores in NY-12 not only to elect a great member of congress but to send a message to the AI industry that they're not going to be able to bully their way to power.

Wildeford claims industry groups targeted Bores to block regulation.

Many users criticize backing Alex Bores in the NY-12 race due to his housing project opposition and Anthropic funding ties, while others defend his RAISE Act as strong AI regulation.

@mattyglesias @AlexBores In a recent forum, Alex Bores cited the performance of a hardcore NIMBY in the city council race as a reason to pause this critical housing project.
As someone who actually lives in the district I care more about thousands of home than some abstract AI signaling
If you live in NYC or know folks there, I recommend doing what you can to get out the vote for Bores.
He’s done more than ~anyone for AI safety via NY, has a reasonable proposal for national AI policy (inc. economic stuff), and the anti-regulation Super PAC deserves humiliation
Happy Friday from the UWS! It's hot out there this weekend—stay cool, stay hydrated, and make sure you have a plan to vote early!
Early voting begins TOMORROW, June 13th.

FWIW, Bores introduced the RAISE Act, which is the second most important piece of AI legislation enacted so far in the U.S. He would certainly introduce federal AI legislation as a Congressman. There are very concrete policy reasons to support him in addition to the signaling considerations that Matt mentioned.

@spencertasch Lasher, he’s the only candidate who will maintain Nadler’s support for this project that will give every NYCHA tenant a brand new home *and* result in thousands of additional mixed income homes plus neighborhood amenities like healthcare facilities and a grocery store

@mattyglesias @AlexBores Bores's opposition to the much-needed, and extremely reasonable, plan to redevelop a Chelsea public housing project, which provides new units for all residents funded by new market-rate housing, is concerning at best, though.

@sam_d_1995 @mattyglesias @AlexBores The fact that you continue to say this as it if it’s not a complex issue is extremely disingenuous. What exactly did he say?

@mattyglesias @AlexBores He opposes redevelopment of public housing in his district @PEWilliams_ @sam_d_1995

@mattyglesias @AlexBores The local YIMBYs have been advising against him tho @PEWilliams_ @sam_d_1995

@sam_d_1995 who you voting for (i also live in ny12)?

@mattyglesias @AlexBores This is all fine but Lasher is going to win in a walk. It’s WILD how many negative Boras ads there are though. To your point, I don’t think I’d have heard of him but for these ads.

@mattyglesias @AlexBores Pass. all he needs is peter thiel to become his top funder to get even worse. stay, and vote, local please

@CharlieBull0ck @sam_d_1995 @mattyglesias @AlexBores The RAISE ACT is a lot less transformational than EmpireAI, which was all Lasher

@erik_engquist @sam_d_1995 @mattyglesias @AlexBores As I understand it, 56% of the 26% of the tenants that responded to a poll are in favor. That’s about 15% of the people that live there. The local club, CRDC, declined to endorse Lasher, and chose Bores. And Mamdani had his own concerns as well. It’s not cut and dry.

I have nothing against EmpireAI but I do not think that a state grants program for compute and whatnot is comparably important to actual regulation of frontier AI development.
I also have not seen anyone, including Micah Lasher, claim that Micah Lasher was solely or even mostly responsible for EmpireAI. He was probably involved given his position in Hochul's office, but I haven't seen any evidence that it was his brainchild or his signature project or anything like that.

@bri_guy_ny @sam_d_1995 @mattyglesias @AlexBores What is complex about the NYCHA issue? Three very different mayors (de Blasio, Adams and Mamdani) all support the project. So does the local City Council member. And, of course, many if not most of the tenants. Why? Because the project makes sense.

@mattyglesias @AlexBores I like Alex and will happily support him in the general, but I’ll be voting for @MicahLasher in the primary. Not so interested in the rest of the field.

@peterwildeford @mattyglesias @AlexBores Fair, but I think this is more like market Beta vs Alpha. Broad public sentiment is so in favor of regulating AI (the Beta), that attempts to shift public opinion against such candidates (the Alpha) isn’t effective. But it doesn’t mean that it has no effect or couldn’t be refined

@mattyglesias @AlexBores Ex-Palantir @AlexBores gets $5 million from Anthropic, $3.5 million from crypto bros and you think he’s gonna “rein in” AI.
Right

@sam_d_1995 @mattyglesias @AlexBores “Abstract AI signaling” is a pretty funny way to describe the defined stances of a guy who wrote NY’s biggest AI regulations, but alright

@mattyglesias @AlexBores You're anti-AI too? Disappointing.
