I’m confused as to what people think “US banning OS” means. If it’s “illegal to run by American corps”, it won’t affect any of the threat actors NSA worries about. If it’s “enforceably illegal to run on US compute”, that implies a total overhaul of hyperscaler privacy model and solving a bunch of unsolved problems in workload monitoring, and still wouldn’t affect most of the actors the NSA worries about.
Is the idea the USG would do this solely to create a regulatory moat for frontier AI companies? This would have fewer proponents because it isn’t actually addressing a security issue, and I think the costs are too high to too many other actors for the political economy to make sense.
