OpenAI says users can now create a dot directly in the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS and Android. Its October 9 release note says the phone-based setup includes naming the dot, customizing its appearance, connecting plugins and choosing to open ChatGPT directly to the dot’s conversation.
What a dot does
OpenAI describes a dot as an always-on ChatGPT agent that can keep working between conversations. It has its own cloud computer, can use connected apps and draws on ChatGPT memory. Users set its goals and controls, review its work and can pause it.
The mobile update removes the need to start that setup on a desktop for users who already have access to dots. It also expands how dots work with Codex. OpenAI says a dot can start Codex work and follow up on existing threads. It can search across ChatGPT conversations and use context from existing Codex threads and automations. Dots can also read and edit ChatGPT Work automations.
Access is still rolling out
Dots are not available to every account at once. OpenAI’s help documentation says access is rolling out gradually to Pro users outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, as well as Business Premium users in supported regions. Enterprise customers, including Edu and Healthcare, can try the beta when a workspace administrator enables it.
