Microsoft has refreshed its smaller 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop with Qualcomm’s six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. Both fanless PCs go on sale Oct. 13 in selected markets, with the tablet starting at $1,149.99 and the laptop at $1,199.

The chip upgrade is the center of the release. Microsoft says its testing found up to 17% faster Office productivity, 18% better battery efficiency, more than 60% faster graphics and up to 95% faster local AI inference compared with the previous Snapdragon X Plus models. Those are manufacturer benchmarks rather than independent results, and Microsoft notes that performance varies by workload and configuration.

Brighter screens and a pen-first AI app

The 12-inch Surface Pro keeps its tablet-to-laptop design and gets a 500-nit display that Microsoft says is 25% brighter. It also adds a black finish and a company-estimated extra hour of active web browsing. Its keyboard and Slim Pen remain separate purchases.

Microsoft is preinstalling a new Ink Canvas app on the Pro. The company describes it as a pen-first workspace for sketching, annotating, generating images and summarizing text. It will also reach other supported Windows devices through the Microsoft Store on Oct. 13, though its AI features require an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription.

The 13-inch Surface Laptop also moves to a 500-nit touchscreen. Microsoft advertises up to 22.5 hours of local video playback, a measure that does not represent every workload, while retaining the full-size keyboard, 3:2 display and fanless aluminum design.

A haptic Surface Mouse joins the launch

Microsoft also introduced a $79.99 Surface Mouse with haptic feedback, a customizable action button and Bluetooth 6.0. It launches in black and platinum on Oct. 13. Business versions of both computers arrive the same day, and the business Surface Pro will offer optional 5G connectivity.
