Coming out to the SFBA is always a bit of living-in-the-future for me, and while I very much appreciated a lot of great conversations about AI, the thing I’m staring at this moment is a far-UVC lamp next to an explainer for why there are far-UVC lamps in all corners of the room.
Patrick McKenzie reports seeing far-UVC disinfection lamps installed in multiple San Francisco rooms as a futuristic physical fixture

Gather around, children, and I’ll tell you about when we just reused the air without cleaning it first, like a previous age used to reuse water without cleaning it first, and how many people used to die of this, and how now we have lamps.
I think the SFBA will soon have lamps usually without the explainer, and relatively soon after that the rest of the world starts seeing them pop up everywhere as if they were mushrooms, and some time after that my children’s children ask me what the ancient past was like.
