Newsom vetoes California smart-glasses bill targeting secret recordings in private spaces
The AP reports the bill would have required recording indicators on smart glasses and other wearables starting in 2028.
TLDR
The AP reports that Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 1130 on September 30, 2026. The bill would have penalized people for using smart glasses to record others without permission in changing rooms, doctors’ offices and other generally private spaces. It also would have required recording indicators on wearables starting in 2028. Newsom said the bill defined wearable recording devices too broadly and noted that California already prohibits nonconsensual recording in such spaces.
