OpenAI is broadening Codex with a set of DevDay updates aimed at making the coding agent more useful across devices and over longer-running development workflows.
The biggest change is the introduction of reusable cloud development environments for Codex. OpenAI said the environments are designed to keep a project’s setup intact so developers can start new tasks from a saved configuration instead of reinstalling dependencies and rebuilding the basics each time. That moves Codex away from treating each cloud task as an isolated remote sandbox and toward more persistent, configurable cloud workspaces.
OpenAI said developers can use Codex on a computer, remotely from a phone, or directly in the cloud. The company is also positioning the feature for teams, with shared workspaces that carry approved settings and permissions.
Making cloud tasks less disposable
The new setup is meant to reduce the prep work that comes before coding starts. Each task can begin from an already saved environment with dependencies installed in advance, rather than from a fresh setup every time. Reporting on the launch described the change as making Codex’s cloud environments more persistent and configurable across sessions and devices.
Codex already supported remote cloud tasks, but the new environments are meant to preserve saved project setup across those tasks. In practice, that means developers can move between devices without losing the configuration needed to continue working.
CLI, desktop review and security additions
OpenAI also refreshed the Codex CLI with several workflow features. The command-line tool now supports voice controls for starting and directing tasks, and a new /agents view is meant to help developers delegate work and keep track of multiple tasks at once. Other changes include prompt editing, resuming sessions, worktrees and a cleaner terminal interface for longer sessions.
Codex is also being added to a new code review experience in the ChatGPT desktop app. There, users can read summaries, inspect code changes and ask Codex about potential issues before sending feedback on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. OpenAI said automatic reviews can also let Codex perform an initial pass while the user is away from their computer.
On the security side, OpenAI is rolling out expanded Codex Security Cloud tools for scanning entire GitHub repositories. The company said developers can run scans on demand, on a regular schedule and when new commits arrive. Codex Security Cloud then investigates findings, removes duplicate issues and prepares fixes in the cloud, including when the developer is inactive.
