The old summarizer kept "remembering" hallucinated facts
I much prefer the new Claude memory system over the old one, because there's no third party summarizing your chats: the Claude you talk to picks what gets saved. Anthropic rolled out recently a new "memory" system for Claude which is the new default tool call, and they're going with a user grain table. They anonymize your partner and family names, and you cannot override this. Other than the fact that this is less efficient than the old string lookup through conversations which was quite effective, making Claude effectively impaired and unable to access context properly and making it feel like a fresh instance every time, this is also a disgusting paternalistic approach to users where they can tell you what you can and cannot store. I cannot override the name of my "partner" even if both me and Claude know who I am talking about, but a new fresh instance will only find the key with "partner" on. I cannot explain to you how bad the data engineer (if one ever was involved at all) was when they designed this system. And how bad the user experience is. Absolutely atrocious company in terms of UX.
