Fascinating how quickly Commerce can move on unsubstantiated Anthropic jailbreak claims, while taking forever to deal with well-documented NVIDIA chip smuggling
AVERI's Miles Brundage says U.S. Commerce Department prioritized unproven Anthropic jailbreaks over documented NVIDIA chip smuggling
Shital Shah warned regulation proponents inevitably regret state intervention.
Many users criticized the Commerce Department's swift focus on Anthropic jailbreaks versus slower action on NVIDIA smuggling as politically driven, inconsistent, and evidence of regulatory incompetence.

@Miles_Brundage A generational play for Anthropic would be to open-source the Fable weights right now before the ruling gets inevitably overturned

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage Me when I'm wishcasting

This drops my interest in federal preemption by like 10-20% at least btw
@pleometric Also, while I was making this, it was revealed that the jailbreak research from folks at Amazon.
To be clear, doing + sharing research is not what I mean here.
I mean that someone is riling up the President + encouraging extreme actions, and it's not Amazon researchers.

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage

@Miles_Brundage It's almost like the 'move fast and break things' ethos only applies until AI actually *moves fast* into uncomfortable territory.

@Miles_Brundage "well documented" in this case mostly means "we know they get there in the end" but that's not actually the vector of enforcement. They have to know the process by which they get there which is extremely difficult to track.

@Miles_Brundage Almost like the Trump admin is very bad at this.
Bad regulation invites challenges and skepticism about future efforts. There’s long term risk to their incoherence.

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage yeah the famously chinese hating dario would open-source fable weights?? i guess bro

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage Why are you moronically assuming it will be overturned?

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage A generational play would be to zero out a multi billion dollar IP?

@deepfates @goth600 @Miles_Brundage

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage Is it Bill Gates potato chips or Jensen Huang silicon chips?

@Miles_Brundage @DanielleFong Better safe than sorry when the risk is hacking the electrical grid

@goth600 @GENIC0N @Miles_Brundage They won't. It's a nice fantasy though.

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage It’s not at all a given that this gets overturned

@goth600 @Miles_Brundage anthropic wants this, they have no compute, its a marketing stunt

@Miles_Brundage Or maybe this is part of anthropic marketing dept to sell it as a separate fee.

@Miles_Brundage pretty sure Dario didn't bribe the administration tho
