Trump allies are trying to cast Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei as the face of AI “doomerism,” Axios reports, turning a technical argument over AI safety into a political attack on the company and its leadership.
The outlet says a memo began circulating within the White House this week that portrays effective altruism as a fringe movement and places Amodei among the people who built its network. Axios says the memo was written by a Trump political adviser who does not work for the White House.
The memo targets a philosophy as well as a company
According to Axios, the memo argues that effective altruism helped create an “AI-doom pipeline” and names both Dario Amodei and his sister, Anthropic president Daniela Amodei. A source close to the administration told the outlet that Dario Amodei represents an approach to innovation that conflicts with Trump's “America First” agenda.
The document also invokes positions on animal welfare, abortion and possible rights for future digital minds. Axios notes that it does not directly tie all of those ideas to Amodei, an important limit on what the memo establishes.
Anthropic figures reject the label
Anthropic has worked to distance itself from effective altruism. Axios points to previous interviews in which Daniela Amodei said she did not identify with the term and Dario Amodei said he was not a member of the movement.
The political pressure lands after Amodei publicly urged a slower pace for frontier AI development and stronger safeguards. Those views have made him a prominent target for administration allies, but AI-safety concerns are not confined to Anthropic or effective altruism; Axios notes that lawmakers from both parties and leaders at other AI companies have also called for guardrails or slower development.
For Anthropic, the immediate consequence is political risk. Axios reports that some administration officials have previously set aside their disputes with the company because of its technical position, but a stronger competing model from OpenAI could make renewed attacks easier.
