UIUC's Talia Ringer argues recursive self-improvement is not a genuine AI threat, pointing instead to corporate monopolization

Researcher Andreas Kirsch contested the dismissal of self-improvement hazards.

@BlackHC RSI is not a real concern, but powerful models being in the hands of only a select few powerful corporations absolutely is

I'm confused why so many are upset and surprised that they can't use Claude anymore to catch up with Anthropic - or at least they won't get the same benefits (it is not clear how much worse the model is vs Mythos for frontier RE tasks)

The safety case is equally strong as is the competition case

Open-source AI is inherently unsafe and one def doesn't want to enable an RSI loop on top of open-source models any time soon

Also people in AI should be happy that it means their jobs are safe for a bit longer

Lastly this is consistent with everything they have done all the way back to GPT-2's release

Negative users criticize corporations for restricting AI access in response to the researcher's warning, accusing them of disempowering humanity while dismissing RSI risks as imaginary.

@BlackHC It's a sci fi scenario about runaway models that somehow disempower humans. But human empowerment is held through our social, economic, and legal systems, not through our "intelligence"

@TaliaRinger Why is RSI not a real concern?

@BlackHC Alarmingly, in an attempt to prevent this imaginary disempowerment, corporations restricting access create the very social, economic, and legal systems that disempower the vast majority of humanity. Except them, conveniently!

@BlackHC Oversight and control by a corporation is one of the worst case scenarios regardless of beliefs about extinction and whatever. All of the incentives are misaligned!

I think open-source AI will have its place but it's good that it's a few months behind. Ideally a bit more too

I'm more concerned about existential risks and risks for democracy, so oversight and control is good

@BlackHC No, that is not sci fi because it is genuinely about Anthropic and other companies enforcing disempowering social, economic, and legal systems

@TaliaRinger It's not a sci-fi scenario. Do you think people being so upset about feeling they are losing access is because disempowerment is a sci-fi scenario?

The panic feels a bit like keep4o because the disempowerment is real

@BlackHC @TaliaRinger Disempowerment is an illusion to keep the workforce in a constant state of fear. RSI can't go very far if all it does is generate tokens.
