for FUTURE REFERENCE for FUTURE DANIELLE the way to make this not COMPRESS TO HELL is to export unmodified file -> import to final cut pro -> set project to SDR rec 709 -> UNCHECK COLOR CONFORM -> add HDR tools -> use HLG (probably) or PQ (if ProRes?) -> Rec 709.
Go for a wet mix to preserve detail, but if you want some of that distorted "the sensor is being overloaded" signal, pull the mix down to ~85% or however looks maximally sci-fi.
Bravo. You have now compressed the signal, that PRESERVES some of the clipped signal, by pushing out and spreading out the clip, and adding it to the full compressed and remapped signal. It's like that sweet sweet guitair distortion pedal board, but for golden photons. Give yourself a cookie.
