Debate Intensifies Over Open Research Versus Accelerating AI Singularity

I think we *are* in an accelerating singularity curve, *but* the stability of the world-system is underappreciated. It will creak but it won't break, and can follow the capabilities takeoff much further than it looks like today. Silicon Valley isn't gonna eat the world.

just to state the obvious: think there's a collison course between those who believe research and science should be open and those who believe we are in an accelerating singularity curve.

I have many smart friends who have believed both for a while but seeing more and more their realization that these beliefs will be in conflict.

I for one believe that America and the west needs open and distributed access to research and computation and sharing of ideas at all times.

@teortaxesTex I'm sure why he thinks "for open science" and "singularity is here" are in opposing positions

@max_paperclips @teortaxesTex they view post-singularity AI like nuclear weapons. to them it's like telling cold warriors "everyone should be allowed nukes actually". nukes-for-all is a niche libertarian ideal, most people would reject it. thus nuclear AI -> heavily regulated and non-proliferation mandatory
