Former Anthropic researcher warns current AI path could end in human extinction at NYC hearing

CNBC reports former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon told the New York City Council that, on the current path, humanity is more likely than not to lose control of AI and that this could end in human extinction. Representatives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta testified under oath, while Council Speaker Julie Menin questioned them about catastrophic risk and legal liability. CBS New York reports the council is considering 10 bills to regulate AI in the city.
