OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs urge global cooperation on AI safety at UN

CNBC reports that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed the UN Security Council on September 23, 2026, calling for international coordination on AI risks. Bloomberg Law says both urged global standards to address the possibility that AI systems could improve on their own and outpace humans' ability to control them.

Their appeal contrasted with President Trump's UN speech the previous day, when he criticized what he called a “globalist scheme” to control AI, CNBC reports. The outlet says both CEOs have backed slowing AI development to manage potential risks. Altman said OpenAI had slowed work unilaterally before and would do so again.
