Moving Windows from a mechanical hard drive to a solid-state drive does not necessarily require a clean installation. A cloning tool can copy the operating system, applications and data to the replacement drive, but PCMag’s guide begins with a more important step: make a separate backup first.

Cloning works at the drive level, so selecting the wrong source or destination can erase data. PCMag recommends backing up important files through Windows File History, a system image or an external drive before changing partitions or starting the copy.

Match the drive to the computer

The replacement SSD needs the right physical format for the machine. Some systems use a 2.5-inch SATA drive, while newer laptops and desktops often take an M.2 “gumstick” drive. The SSD also needs enough capacity for the data being moved.

A smaller SSD can work if the used space on the old drive fits, but files may have to be removed first. PCMag notes that desktops with multiple bays can keep the old hard drive as secondary storage after Windows moves to the SSD.

Connect and initialize the SSD

Both drives must be attached during the clone. A desktop may accept both internally; a single-drive laptop generally needs a USB adapter, dock or enclosure for the new SSD.

A blank drive may not appear in File Explorer until it is initialized in Windows Disk Management. PCMag uses GPT for a system with UEFI firmware and notes that older BIOS-based computers may require MBR. The correct choice depends on the computer, so users should check the manufacturer’s documentation rather than guessing.

Clone, install and verify

Many SSD makers provide their own migration utility. PCMag points Samsung owners to Samsung Magician and Western Digital or SanDisk owners to the vendors’ version of Acronis True Image. For drives without a bundled tool, the guide recommends the free home version of DiskGenius.

After the clone completes, shut down the computer and install the SSD. Systems with two drives may need their BIOS or UEFI boot order changed so the SSD comes first. Once Windows starts, File Explorer should show the SSD as the C: drive.

Only after that check should the old drive be erased or repurposed. Keeping the original intact until the new installation boots successfully leaves a straightforward recovery path if the clone did not work.
