Bend creator Victor Taelin asks if Brazil can train frontier AI, sparking fashion supermodel jokes
Google's AI Overview listed Gisele Bündchen as a top model.
Positive users praise impressive Brazilian fine-tuning benchmarks and clever responses to frontier model queries, while negative users doubt the country's infrastructure and expertise can support such development.

Brazil of all places has this covered
do we have people in Brazil capable of training a frontier model

do we have people in Brazil capable of training a frontier model

@VictorTaelin Hell yeah we have Taelin, now we need a bunch of money, maybe a local semi condutors industry and a shit ton of experts, it would be nice to be done in 3 years but maybe in 30 we’ve get there.

@VictorTaelin Da Prefeitura do Rio:

Finetune do qwen, claro.

@TheRastrian are you sure money, of all things, is the problem?
I'm fairly sure our industries would be fairly happy to invest
I'm more concerned about the actual talent

@VictorTaelin

@henryhe4rt but?

Money attracts talents in general and you know that well, and the problem is more political than monetary at this point.
There’s excellent talent here in Brazil that already are doing incredible research’s in those fields, but money and tech still a gap when you see the current economics.
So yeah, I think money is one of the major problems today to develop a national model or company AI related. Even with great minds we still need access to internal knowledge that only by hiring external key-people we can achieve.

@VictorTaelin carry your cross

Seria interessante

@Rafa_Schwinger first how could I lead a company in a area I'm not expert on
second we do not have talent, investment, or infra needed for this to be anything other than a money bonfire
not even openai could beat anthropic. nobody can

@sohakes @VictorTaelin @TheRastrian deepseek and others trained frontiers more than once and they are also compute constrained. they are not talented constrained tho.
>frontier labs have brazilian researchers. that's part of the "problem" (if we want to get to frontier in brazil). any talent would just get poached

@VictorTaelin my man @DerekFeriancek and I are in São Paulo right now.
we got you

@VictorTaelin @TheRastrian They would not. They are not willing to take risks, rent seeking is the modus operandi here.

@VictorTaelin Brazillians, likely. In Brazil, unlikely.

@fakenickels @VictorTaelin Yup, the risks are more political at this point, as I’ve stated here:

@VictorTaelin Não temos nem infra nem pesquisadores pica pra isso Não dá

@Rafa_Schwinger @TheRastrian @VictorTaelin Nor even hardware, what do you need so ?
