June Oven shutdown exposes the cost of cloud-dependent smart homes

Weber switched off the June Oven app and cloud services on September 22, turning one of the earliest high-end smart cooking appliances into a case study in what happens when connected hardware outlives its servers. The oven itself still works through its built-in touchscreen and retains local food recognition, but owners have lost remote control, live camera viewing, software updates, parts and support, The Verge reports.

That distinction matters. June ovens have not become inert boxes, but the connected features that separated them from ordinary countertop ovens are gone. The Verge also warns that a future factory reset could leave owners with few recovery options once the supporting services are unavailable.

An acquisition did not guarantee a long afterlife

Weber acquired June in January 2021, buying its software, technology and intellectual property after the companies had worked together on Weber Connect. Weber later stopped making the ovens. The company told The Verge that it considered releasing the June technology as open source, but decided against it because June intellectual property remains part of Weber Connect.

The result is an awkward split between durable hardware and temporary software. Owners can keep cooking, but the app-based conveniences and ongoing support attached to the original purchase no longer exist.
