Lightspeed is seeking $250 million for a new India-focused fund that will concentrate on early-stage artificial intelligence companies, according to TechCrunch.

The proposed Lightspeed India Partners V would be half the size of the firm's $500 million predecessor from 2022. TechCrunch reports that the earlier fund has already committed about 80% of its capital.

A smaller fund with a faster cycle

An investor letter reviewed by TechCrunch says the new size reflects Lightspeed's current investment pace and a shorter deployment period. The firm argues that raising less capital now will let it focus on individual deals and return to investors sooner for the next vehicle.

The fund also aligns Lightspeed's India fundraising with its global funds for the first time. That change can simplify portfolio planning across regions, but it also means the India strategy is being evaluated alongside the firm's broader capital allocation.

The thesis centers on applied AI

Lightspeed expects AI to create substantial value in India and Southeast Asia, particularly at the application layer. India has a large software workforce and a long services history, but it has attracted less frontier-model investment than the United States or China.

The firm already backs Indian model developer Sarvam AI as well as global AI companies including Anthropic, xAI and Databricks. The $250 million figure is a fundraising target, not a closed fund. Its eventual size, investor commitments and portfolio will determine how much capital actually reaches regional startups.
