so there's no incentive for OpenAI to release their next model right now, right?
Positive users see the current moment as ideal for OpenAI to release its next model and regain the lead over Anthropic, while negative users call the situation a shit show driven by poor decisions, political favoritism, and broader risks.

why would openai release their next model right now?
they've been claiming their next model (and current models) are as good as fable at cyber. so if they release their model while fable is offline, all attention will be on them and people will ask why their model is allowed to be used by foreign nationals.
so either the model isn't as good, or fable should be public right now.

@MatthewBerman Fable will be back soon. Incentives haven't really changed.

@mark_k you think so?
if openai drops 5.6 right now, everyone will compare it to fable and ask "why is this model ok and fable isn't?"

@albfresco why? if they release it now, they'll be under the same pressure to not give it to foreign nationals.

No one will release new models, for a while anyways. The second a new OpenAI model drops it will be the laser focus of everyone wondering why it can’t be banned as well. Either it’s seen to have unfair permission that Anthropic doesn’t have, or that it’s such a bad model it poses no danger.
There’s no upside for OpenAI. Better to let the public believe you have magical models behind the scenes.
Like everything Trump touches, things will degrade and break. AI has avoided this for years but now it’s here. This little game they are playing has stifled AI progress. The days of new models every two weeks are likely over.
No one can trust the product in an enterprise environment, not when it can be banned on a whim by a grifting government.

I dunno.
OpenAI has a long history of exploiting opportunities presented to it when the administration engages in culture wars with the AI firm that is not represented by the biggest donors to Trump's SuperPAC.
If OpenAI doesn't have a model that competes with Fable, it would be totally on brand for them to release what they have...particularly if it's Opus-class only.

@MatthewBerman so anthropic has successfully slowed down ai for all of us, which was their stated goal?

@MatthewBerman OAI just have to wait 30 days under the new rules to get it safety tested. Anthropics problem is political not technical

@MatthewBerman You just know Anthropic would try and jailbreak it to get it banned ;P

@MatthewBerman more incentive now IMO. Wouldn’t you if you were a competitor?
OpenAI should be fine.
Sam bent that knee all the way.

@MatthewBerman Sure there is - @thsottiaux needs a reason (any reason) to reset the rate limits.

@TeksEdge Yeah this is likely coming. KYC for AI.

@MatthewBerman there is absolutely incentive to release a model that will "stay" released
i'd argue the push is even harder to release it soon

@xCryptoTemple yeah but everyone will look at openai's model, similarly capable to fable, and ask why it shouldn't be "banned"

@MatthewBerman Of course they will because most people believe in fairness.
But this is personal like everything else is with Trump.

@mark_k @MatthewBerman Back for US citizens.

@vega_holdings @MatthewBerman might could that too -- or some random delivery firm in china will deliver a new model that gets closer to SOTA than ever and freaks everyone out.

@MatthewBerman on the contrary -- the game is still afoot to get the USG to deem "you" the gatekeeper or at minimum one of the "primes" -- OAI and Google both have the oppo now to show how to release a fable class model.

@MatthewBerman correct

@MatthewBerman depends if they have a fable equivalent model
if so and if they can keep it from getting banned then it’s a slam dunk
depends how much of the ban was legitimate concern vs big egos getting mad at each other…
