METR and Redwood Research evaluated OpenAI's monitoring of internal agents

METR says two employees from METR and Redwood Research spent three weeks at OpenAI in summer 2026 evaluating systems used to monitor internal agents for misalignment. METR has published a brief write-up of their work. OpenAI says it gave the team deep access to its infrastructure and that the findings helped strengthen safeguards as it expanded the monitoring system. It says the pilot will also shape future research collaborations with METR and other outside evaluators.
