At the first point where we have AIs much smarter than humans (noting that some people think this is today) with today's pace of progress, I think they would be fairly aligned in order to reach that point (to be able to do sufficient automated AI R&D). So I don't see why not.
IMO the current pace of progress if continued for 10 years would not result in a sharp labor market shock.
If I'm wrong about the intelligence explosion, I still don't see how a pause or slowdown now would help, given that we don't have any idea how the resulting slightly better alignment techniques for LLMs would help us change the outcome under IE.

What about if you're wrong about the intelligence explosion and progress is five times faster?
