PCMag highlights how to build a local Plex media library as streaming prices climb

Kumar writes that the minimum baseline is an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and either Windows 10 or newer or macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer.

PCMag also notes that users who expect to host a larger collection, especially 4K HDR video, should plan for multiple terabytes of storage. Kumar says a desktop PC can work, but it needs to remain powered on and connected if others will be streaming from it. As an alternative, he points to a NAS device for people who want a system designed to stay online continuously.

How the Plex setup works

Kumar’s walkthrough starts with creating a free Plex account and installing Plex Media Server. From there, users open the Plex app, add libraries, choose a library type such as movies or TV shows, and direct Plex to the folders where their media files are stored.

The article says users can refresh those libraries manually by scanning library files after adding new media. They can also turn on automatic scanning in settings, or schedule scans at intervals ranging from every 15 minutes to daily.

Sharing and paid features

PCMag says Plex also lets users share libraries with other people after granting access to a Plex username or email address. Administrators can limit which libraries each guest can see, a feature Kumar describes as useful for keeping some collections private.

The guide also points readers to Plex’s Authorized Devices page, where account owners can review every device accessing the server and revoke unfamiliar ones.

Not everything in the setup is free. Kumar notes that remote streaming outside the home requires Plex’s Remote Watch Pass at $2.99 per month, while offline downloads require Plex Pass at $6.99 per month.
