The best browser depends more on privacy and features than raw speed

Choosing a browser in 2026 is less about finding one that can render the modern web and more about deciding which tradeoffs matter: privacy, compatibility, extensions, built-in tools or tight integration with an operating system.

PCMag's updated comparison evaluates Brave, Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The publication removed Opera and added Brave in its May 27 update, then reran benchmarks on Windows 11 and macOS.

The speed results do not produce a dramatic winner. PCMag says the browsers all feel responsive in ordinary use and cautions that synthetic tests do not perfectly predict real-world performance. Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers tend to remain close because they share much of the same underlying engine.

Differences become clearer elsewhere. Chrome leads PCMag's compatibility comparison, with Edge close behind. Brave and Firefox are the publication's strongest privacy choices; Brave includes an ad blocker, while Firefox remains the major independent alternative to Chromium and continues to support extensions that are constrained under Chromium's Manifest V3 rules.
