TikTok permanently suspended the promotional account for Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk on Friday, as the film began its wider theatrical rollout. Variety confirmed the suspension, while distributor Bleecker Street told The Hollywood Reporter that it was appealing the decision.
According to THR, TikTok’s notice cited a “level of severity with political-policy violations” and said some violations trigger immediate suspension. The platform did not identify the specific content at issue, and representatives had not responded to either outlet’s requests for comment.
The suspension landed during a major expansion
The documentary opened Oct. 9 in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, then expanded to 472 North American theaters on Friday, Variety reported. THR said the TikTok account had attracted more than 10,000 followers and that Bleecker Street had planned to spend part of its marketing budget promoting posts on the platform.
That timing means even a successful appeal could arrive after a crucial release weekend. The distributor said TikTok informed it Friday afternoon that a permanent suspension was coming, and the page disappeared soon afterward.
What remains unclear
THR reported that the account had recently published an intermission-themed ad suggesting viewers delete their X accounts, discuss a “fascist hellscape” and change seats if they were “too far to the right.” A second post urged people to see the film “before it gets shut down.” Neither report established that those posts triggered the suspension.
