Of course reassessments are inevitable and probably necessary given the change in political leadership, but I wonder if Westminster really understands the costs of that kind of delay

That's what you do. The taxi drivers now go off & produce new stuff. Which means we are wealthier.
What's the point and who's it for?
Technology and automation lowers the cost of goods and services. Lowering the cost of goods and services means that people have more purchasing power. That means they buy more things, invest, and/or pay down debt. This increased spending creates demand, which means businesses can produce more, hire more workers, and invest in new technologies to lower production costs in more sectors. This creates a virtuous cycle of economic growth which creates more jobs and higher wages, and generates more tax revenue to fund public services, without raising tax rates which makes everyone upset.
So, Mr Burnham, the point is to put more money in people's pockets, make public services better, and create new opportunities for people to grow and learn and contribute meaningfully to their society.
I'm sorry you don't understand this basic economic process, but perhaps you should go back to school instead of trying to run our country.

@rowlsmanthorpe This is very shortsighted and my biggest fear with Burnham and co is their finger in the ears approach to the impact of AI on the world economy.
To elaborate: AI will have serious social and economic consequences and we should be trying to get it right, sovereignty included. But attracting tech investment has been one of the few good news stories in the British economy this past decade, and we’d be mad to jeopardise it.

I don't have access to the article but I think the opinion being expressed comes from a union representative - they've made a concerted effort in recent years to get Uber drivers to join the unions. Only a fraction of drivers did, but like any union, they'll claim to speak for all drivers.

@dioscuri that's all well and good but it's currently running on silicon transistors that are out of date in 3 years, cost a fortune in energy and water are noisy as hell and will probably be superceded in 10 by photonics and a new moores law trying to fit as many fibre optics in as poss.
@dioscuri Absolutely moronic policy making. We should be supporting both, it's not one or the other. Bringing US tech jobs into London and the UK is adding massive tax revenue and benefits the UK ecosystem as a whole!
