Xbox FanFest attendees in London got a look at a combat-focused Fable demo running on Xbox Series X at 60 frames per second in performance mode, according to The Verge's Tom Warren. The September 26 showing moves the reboot's combat demonstration in front of a broader event audience after Playground Games previously used Gamescom for press and creator hands-on sessions.
Warren said he was hearing “lots of good things” about the demo. That is an early reaction, not a technical test: his post does not include frame-time measurements, resolution details or a direct comparison with the game's other graphics settings. It also does not establish that the London build was identical to the one shown at Gamescom.
A closer look at Playground's combat system
The London report is brief, but Xbox Wire's earlier Gamescom hands-on provides a fuller picture of what Playground is building. That demo sent the Hero and Humphry into a haunted mine and let players switch among melee, ranged and magic without stopping to work through menus.
Two loadouts showed how differently those tools could combine. The hands-on paired a heavy two-handed hammer with dodges, parries and finishers; ranged choices included a deliberate Deepwood Bow and a faster Repeater Crossbow. Spells ranged from straightforward fire and lightning attacks to crowd-control tools that lift enemies, teleport the Hero behind a target or turn an opponent into a chicken.
The enemy mix is designed to make those choices matter. Armored Hollow Folk can shut down some ranged attacks, Wraiths can create more enemies, and the flying Lantern Keeper mini-boss pushes players to target a weak point from a distance. Playground calls the broader approach “style-weaving,” an update to the series' traditional Strength, Skill and Will framework.
What the 60fps report does — and does not — show
Seeing a reported 60fps performance mode on Xbox Series X is useful confirmation that the option is operating in an event build, but it is not a final performance review. The available report does not cover image quality, sustained performance across heavier scenes or settings on Xbox Series S, PC or PlayStation 5.
The official schedule gives the team more time to tune those tradeoffs. Xbox says is due February 23, 2027, with Premium Edition early access beginning February 18. The reboot is planned for Xbox Series X|S, PC and cloud, with Game Pass availability at launch.
