Indeed, that has been the push, very much in the spirit of the Ladder, but perhaps we need to speak a little louder. I’m not so sure. It took us several years to clarify and formalize what we now call the Pearl Causal Hierarchy. "Ladder" is the more accessible metaphor; historically, when I was a student in Judea’s lab, we simply called it the causal hierarchy. Formalizing, operationalizing, and putting these distinctions to use is precisely the point. I hope we can help push this conversation in a more rigorous direction, so that this mathematical structure can be genuinely used, rather than remaining at the level of elegant introductions or generic statements.
