Users are praising the IBM PC's original hardware like its keyboard and dual floppies as still awesome while also loving the masterful copywriting in Apple's 1981 welcome ad.
This advertisement was released two weeks after the debut of IBM's first personal computer, the IBM PC, on August 12, 1981. The playful ad was Apple's way of "welcoming" IBM into the PC marketplace.
It was bold and we will likely never see this type of advertising again.
My father bought one of the very first released.
Pre-ordered via his job connections (worked in MIS for a Fortune 500 co), it was actually serial number 3.
As in #000003.
I believe number 1 is in a museum, number 2's location is unknown.
Dad's resides with one of my brothers - in storage in its original box no less!

@BrianRoemmele 😁

Lol...I remember when they came out in SA My parents couldn't afford to get me one So I missed out on having a computer in my teenage years. My little brother was the lucky one. He was the first one in the family to get one. But he is in IT today...so I guess mom and dad knew best. 😅

@penny5103440323 @BrianRoemmele Thanks Penny. 🤗 It's the middle of the night...just past witching hour and I'm freezing my butt off. Winter just started this side of the world. Have a great day/night

@BrianRoemmele "Exactly. On August 12, 1981, IBM unveiled the Model 5150—the iconic machine that defined the modern personal computer standard.Developed by a secret team in Boca Raton, Florida, the original IBM PC completely changed the computing landscape. Key details of the release included"

@BrianRoemmele Our first at home was an 8086 IBM clone. I brought a 386 to college and then had the first Pentium 100mHz on campus. Faster than the computer labs!

@BrianRoemmele taught myself visual basic on that bad boy

@BrianRoemmele You might enjoy this video from 14 years ago when the PC turned 30, Brian! Guy dryly reads directly from the user manual while showcasing his mint-condition original IBM PC, pretty great 😁 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5cF8Us4cK4

@BrianRoemmele I served on a BOD with Bob Moffat.

@BrianRoemmele My first PC was Wang 486/66mhz with 16mg ram & 50meg hard drive. Win3.1 first to connect Network card 96 hz baud.

@BrianRoemmele Yup. If I recall mine was like the picture and it was $2500

@BrianRoemmele Model 5150
Coincidentally, I hope, the same California law enforcement term for a mentally disturbed person.

@BrianRoemmele The copywriters back then were like Gods. Love every word, love every punctuation. Thank You, Brian!
