Google Photos may add a regenerate option for AI wardrobe items

Android Authority reports Google Photos version 7.95 includes work on a Regenerate image option for AI wardrobe items, potentially letting users redo clothes and accessories that were rendered inaccurately.

TLDR

Google Photos appears to be testing a “Regenerate image” option for individual AI wardrobe items, as reported by Android Authority after a teardown of version 7.95. The feature would let users redo AI-generated images for clothes, shoes, glasses, and other accessories when the first result doesn’t closely match the real item. Android Authority says the option appears in an item’s details page and can run in the background. The outlet also notes the replacement image may still differ from the original product, with changes such as altered colors or shifted logos. If released, the tool could make Google Photos’ outfit-trying features more useful by improving the wardrobe images they depend on.

Google Photos may be getting a small but potentially important upgrade to its AI wardrobe tools. Android Authority reports that Google is working on a new “Regenerate image” option for individual wardrobe items inside the app.

Google Photos’ wardrobe feature uses AI to identify clothing and accessories from a user’s photos and generate standalone images of those items. Those generated item images can then feed other features, including Google Photos’ outfit tools that are meant to show how pieces might look together.

The issue, as Android Authority describes it, is that the first generated image is not always a good match for the real-world item. Right now, if the app creates an inaccurate version of a shirt, pair of glasses, shoes, or another accessory, users do not appear to have a built-in way to redo just that item.

A redo button for mismatched items

Android Authority says it found the new option in Google Photos version 7.95 and enabled it in a teardown. In the reported implementation, users would open an item’s details page in their wardrobe, tap the three-dot menu, and choose “Regenerate image.” The app then shows progress while creating a new version, and the process can continue in the background if the user leaves the page.

That would give users more control over a system that currently seems to lock in the first AI-made representation of an item, even if that representation is off.

Better, but not necessarily exact

The reported feature is not described as a way to reproduce an identical version of the original item. Android Authority says regenerated images can still change details. In its testing, the outlet said Google Photos altered colors on a pair of glasses and added nose pads, while a regenerated shirt saw color tweaks and a repositioned logo.

That means the tool could help when the first result is clearly wrong, but it would not guarantee a faithful recreation of the actual product.

Why it matters for Google Photos’ outfit features

The update could be especially useful because these wardrobe images are used for more than simple organization. Android Authority says Google Photos relies on saved wardrobe items for its “Try on outfits” functionality, so improving the underlying item images could make those outfit previews more useful as well.

Because this was uncovered in an app teardown, there is no guarantee Google will ship the feature publicly. But if it does, the addition would address a practical limitation in Google Photos’ AI wardrobe system: the inability to fix a bad item render without starting over elsewhere.
