If a 6 months gap is this bad, it pretty straightforwardly means that China (>6 months on relevant skills) is catastrophically insecure (and Europe is totally defenseless). That's… about correct! And they're right to aim at the defender's advantage.
I still think public investment in fast-follower models is a a fairly doomed proposition, but agree that having a European AI alternative would obviously be good.

That's true. But that's still better than the status quo: Right now we're dependent on gas, coal, and the weather. Adding nuclear makes each existing dependency less risky.
