Beginning in Bindawa, Bakori and Kafur LGAs, the one-year intervention will take a prevention-first approach—protecting farms, restoring degraded land, improving water management and reducing post-harvest losses. Planned interventions include work on 150 farms, rehabilitation of at least 12 solar-powered water systems, rehabilitation of 150 food-storage facilities, distribution of 500 hermetic storage bags, and climate-smart agriculture training. The programme will also create temporary income opportunities through cash-for-work for 180 people and support livelihood diversification for approximately 300 women, while prioritising smallholder farmers and other vulnerable households. Implemented by Mercy Corps Nigeria in collaboration with Katsina State institutions and development partners, the initiative is intended to generate evidence for possible expansion, with Governor Radda directing that opportunities to scale similar interventions to other LGAs be assessed.
