Exactly. We might as well devote ourselves to training them to use the internet (news flash to the olds: they've already figured it out).

The full phrase I most often hear is "taught to use AI responsibly," which is less naive about the state of usage but unfortunately assumes a whole apparatus of moral education from which the modern academy deliberately divested

Especially when the people saying this seem to think every class in every subject needs to constantly teaching AI. Imagine if in 2000 every class every week focused on Google search

  @jennfrey I think you are incorrect about this Jennifer. I've been working with LLMs since 2020, with my poet hat on, and it is a complicated and strange technology that has taught me so much about language. Understanding how to use it to learn is the point.

    @anecdotal Yes, I know we disagree about this! I'm not in favor of a total ban, but in many contexts it simply has no place. We know how much ground we have already lost when it comes to cultivating the disciplined attention liberal learning requires. AI makes progress there…

      @anecdotal A similar thing occurred with smartphones. The olds were convinced the young could handle it, but only because they were blessed with a true formation without them, and could handle them (somewhat, the olds also struggled).

    Why are you confident you have learned to use it well? I've seen little evidence anyone claiming to work in the humanities has learned to use it well. And if you are claiming expertise to direct the organization of universities you would need to convince those who are skeptical…
