CT Scans expose patients to substantial ionizing radiation. A single chest or abdominal CT can deliver the equivalent of dozens to hundreds of chest X-rays.
In 2023 alone, the roughly 93 million CT exams performed in the U.S. are projected to cause approximately 103,000 future cancers over patients’ lifetimes, with higher risks for children, women, and those receiving multiple scans.
Cumulative exposure raises concerns for lung, colon, breast, leukemia, and bladder cancers. Additional dangers include allergic reactions or kidney damage from iodinated contrast dye, high costs, and the fact that radiation risk makes routine or repeated preventive use medically inadvisable.
