openai could’ve bought 200 of the most influential x accounts for what they reportedly spent on tbpn.
if i were in the acquisition meeting, this would’ve been one of the first ideas i’d bring up. about two years ago i posted how twitter may become hostile to them, but they paid for a channel relying almost entirely on this platform for distribution (what!?!).
they clearly overvalued centralized distribution at a time when influence / messaging is increasingly decentralized. a diversified portfolio of creator relationships or ownership stakes could be more resilient, harder to censor, & better aligned with how attention actually flows online today.
i understand there are deep deep tradeoffs to both strategies but the former they executed on had clear vulnerabilities which they didn’t think were actual vulnerabilities or missed them entirely.
