@maxhodak_ Distributed beats centralized. Same reason monopolies don't innovate. No competition, no pressure to improve. Open weights are the only model that scales without becoming control.
@maxhodak_ No company in its right mind would want to depend on a proprietary centralized US-based AI model where the model owner can go bankrupt or the US administration can pull the plug anytime.

it seems increasingly clear to me that all of the really positive outcomes involve widely available open weight models not to say there wouldn’t also be some secret government weapons or something, but at least at the industrial frontier distributed has to beat centralized
