Many users praise Niko McCarty's $100K biology microgrants after the pilot because small grants can unlock major progress in fast biology while also signaling credibility that attracts bigger funders.

@NikoMcCarty What do you do with interesting people after you find them? Just curious.
Neat stuff. Definitely continue!

@NikoMcCarty 4. This allows people who need to earn a living to find a pretext to a) devote time to something they value and are interested in, while simultaneously b) avoiding financial consequences - such as lost earnings due to absence from work or the need to dip into their savings.

@NikoMcCarty The "vote of confidence" point is underrated. A small grant signals to bigger funders that someones worth backing, and a lot of money just follows other money. Surfacing 6 people you didn't know existed is a great ROI on $1K each too. Excited to see the next round.

@NikoMcCarty Careful Niko, this is how you become a VC.
I caution you only because "get more money into the hands of aspiring scientists" is a distinct goal from "spur scientific advances", and there's no playbook for the latter.

@NikoMcCarty That’s a great reminder that a small grant can unlock a lot more than people expect, especially for fast biology. The first round sounds like it proved the point.

@kasthomas Just talk with them, try to meet them, help them as much as I can in future endeavors, etc.
